As Eddie and I backed out of the driveway on our way to the inaugural worship service of Fletcher Presbyterian, he said to me, “Well, we’ve never done anything quite like this before.” And that was saying something, considering we have been in ministry our entire married life – almost 30 years!
But he was right. This was different.
When the idea of a church plant in Fletcher first came up, it made sense to my practical side. We live in Fletcher; it’s convenient; it’s reasonable. But it wasn’t comfortable. I had gotten settled into the routine at Reformation. I was comfortable there. It had been a wonderfully healing place for us after some difficult ministry years. I loved going to worship, volunteering when I could, going to community groups, popping into ministry opportunities as I was able, and developing a few really great friendships, but practical impediments (such as distance) kept me from being able to do life with folks from church throughout the week.
Being part of the core team of FPC has met the need for fellowship in real and unexpected ways. As we have prayed, planned, worked, and worshipped together, our hearts have been knit together in a way that I never expected. We are becoming family. Also, the uncertainty of undertaking something new and a bit scary has driven me to Jesus and given me greater delight in my heavenly Father. Jesus is using the FPC church plant to stretch me and to fill me. And, indeed, my cup overflows!
