Interview with: Stan Baston, Elder, Cayce Presbyterian Church
Stan is one of three members who has been attending Cayce Presbyterian Church since day one 67 years ago. Cayce Presbyterian Church was formed as Edwards Memorial ARP Church in November 1957.
What prompted Cayce to make some changes?
We changed the name to give the church our location in the name, making it a part of the community. To keep the Edwards Memorial legacy, we applied that name to our fellowship hall. A few years ago, we swapped the Sunday school time, which was first, with the worship service time. Before doing this, people who would skip Sunday school but attend the worship service. By swapping the times, those people stayed for Sunday school after the worship service. We plan to do it again this summer. We will also be looking at making some changes to our music in the worship service.
What is Cayce doing to strengthen the congregation to reach the next generation?
In the past, not a whole lot. This summer, we will begin a 15 week Sunday school series on evangelism and discipleship. We will have VBS in July and School Time Bible in September.
Any encouragement for other churches?
In the past 67 years there have been times when the church seemed like it would not survive but we’re still here. When God has a plan for a church it will survive. Our mission statement is “Connecting Our Community to the Good News and Hope of Jesus Christ.” Through much prayer and effort, we hope to be here for a long time.
Prayer requests for Cayce?
To have boldness and a sense of urgency to go out and share the Gospel and to make disciples of Jesus.
