Covenant Church in Burbank, California is on mission for God’s glory in Burbank.
Burbank is its own city that’s surrounded by the larger cities of Los Angeles and Glendale, but, experientially, Burbank is like a large neighborhood of Los Angeles. The “Media Capital of the World,” Burbank is home to Disney, Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon, and also many smaller studios and production-firms and production people. Covenant Church began as a Bible study in 2022. Morning and evening worship were launched in April, 2023. The name “Covenant” was chosen because life in Los Angeles is hard. It’s very expensive. Jobs and friends go and leave as quickly as they arrive. We wanted to make it easy to tell people that there’s one place in which they can put their total confidence. That’s of course God and his promises, and how great is the promise of salvation in Christ?!
Covenant meets morning and evening on Sundays for worship in a film studio. The same studio where I work full time during the week, managing the studio and facilitating a variety of productions. The meeting place of the church is very Burbank-esque. Covenant is a diverse church with people from many backgrounds and several languages. And Burbank neighborhoods are very diverse, so we’re glad that the church looks like the city.
The greatest challenge of sin that Covenant faces in Burbank is indifference. We haven’t found that any around us are outwardly hostile to the gospel, or the church, or to believers. But instead, they simply don’t care. They’re not interested in the gospel message because they cannot see how it has any relevance to them, despite our best efforts to share concerning pending judgement. Los Angeles and Burbank are cities in which society allows you to be anything, without judgement, as long as that thing doesn’t affect them. Love Jesus? The city says that’s great – and that’s for you. And of no interest to me.
So it’s a real challenge. But a wonderful calling and a wonderful mission field. My wife Amanda and I do love Jesus. And we love Los Angeles and we love this church. We would love to partner with you for the growth of God’s kingdom here. There is so much opportunity. The harvest is plentiful.
